Programming Realistic Midi Drums

Programming realistic midi drums is an art of its own. It seems to be a huge problem for many starting out musicians and home studio warriors. However, it’s not that hard to do once you have a right kind of workflow. In this video, I’m showing you my way of programming realistic midi drums. Hopefully you’ll gain some ideas of how to approach it yourself.

There are always two things to take into consideration: velocity and timing. Velocity is the “loudness” of the hit and timing is well… Timing. Programming midi drums is a bit different in terms of which velocities works the best, depending on which drum plugin you’re using. I’m using GetGood Drums in this example.

Some like to use tools like “humanize” to breath some life into their drums and that’s fine. Humanize changes both velocity and timing. I’ve noticed that it works in small dozes, in other words if you humanize just a little.

In this video I’m showing you how I like to approach the changing of velocity and timing. As you probably noticed, I’m doing it manually a lot. Unlike some might think, it’s actually pretty fast once you get in the right groove of things.

Hopefully you found this video helpful. If there’s anything you want me to cover in the future videos let me know. Send me an email or leave a comment below. Ask if there’s anything unclear or if I left something out. Cheers!
