How to Approach Mixing Midi Drums?

Midi drums are the savior of home studios. No need to record real drums in a real space or deal with all the mics, pre-amps, cables. However, when the time comes to actually mix the midi drums – what do you do? How do you approach mixing midi drums? Do you start mixing them with the mixing tools in the drum plugin itself? Do you treat the midi drums as one stereo channel?

You want to be able to mix the individual drums like you would mix real drums, right? Before you start mixing, you want all the tracks to be audio instead of midi. How to do that? Luckily some drum plugins allow you to route the individual drums into individual separate channels in DAW – but not all. What do you do in such a situation?

Have no fear my friend. In this video I show you how to do all of this, whether you can or cannot route your midi drums to separate channels. You learn how to take your stereo midi drum track and turn it into separate audio file of each drum.

After preparing and setting up the midi drums for mixing you’ll also learn how to mix the drums with EQ and compression – the way I start every mix. Of course, mixing the drums (or midi drums) depends on the genre, mood, song and other instruments. Nevertheless, this stuff applies every time you are mixing drums, whether they’re midi or not.

Hopefully you found this post helpful. If there’s anything you want me to cover in the future videos let me know. Send me an email or leave a comment below. Ask if there’s anything unclear or if I left something out. Cheers!
